The problem
Starting point
Well test and production logging results were stored as free-form reports. Engineers had to find key parameters and signs of complications in them by hand, and an expert review of the well stock to select well interventions took one to three days.
The objective was to speed up the well stock review: extract data from the reports automatically, answer engineers' questions about them and find wells with complications that require interventions.
Solution
Report analysis with IDT Assist
IDT Assist was applied to two tasks. The first was extracting key parameters from well test reports and answering engineers' natural-language queries: an engineer asked a question in plain words and received the required values from the reports with a link to the source.
The second task was finding complications in production logging reports. IDT Assist recognised 18 classes of complications, including formation clay swelling, sediment build-up in the wellbore and behind-casing flow, and produced a list of wells needing attention.
IDT Assist is tuned for recall: it rarely misses complications, and the final decision on each well stays with the engineer. As a result, the well stock review for intervention selection took considerably less time, and the complications found helped reduce the idle well stock.
